— WHO IS THIS FOR?

Who benefits from Digital Smile Design ?

DSD is most useful before any moderate to large cosmetic case. Here are the situations where the planning protocol pays off.

  • Patients planning veneers (4 or more teeth).
  • Patients considering full mouth reconstruction or smile makeover.
  • Crown lengthening cosmetic cases where gum line shape matters.
  • Anyone uncertain about a cosmetic change and wanting to test the result first.
  • Patients who have had cosmetic dentistry elsewhere that did not match expectations.

For single-tooth bonding or whitening, DSD is overkill. The protocol shines on multi-tooth cases where shape, length, and proportion all need to be designed together.

OUR APPROACH

See your future smile, before any tooth is touched

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a planning protocol that takes the guesswork out of cosmetic dentistry. Using high-resolution photos, video, intraoral scans, and smile design software, we render your projected outcome on screen, then 3D-print a physical try-in mock-up that we place over your existing teeth. You see and feel the new smile before deciding to proceed.

This matters because cosmetic restorations (veneers, crowns, full mouth reconstruction) are irreversible. Once enamel is reduced or teeth are restored, going back is difficult. With DSD, the decision happens at the design stage, not at the chair. You approve the smile, then we execute it. The result is dramatically more predictable than designs done freehand at the moment of treatment.

DSD is most commonly used to plan porcelain veneers and full mouth reconstruction. When the gum line needs reshaping as part of the design, crown lengthening is integrated into the same treatment plan.

  • High-resolution facial and intraoral photography
  • Smile design simulation in specialised software
  • 3D-printed mock-up you can try in physically
  • Adjustments before any irreversible treatment

— TYPES & OPTIONS

What Digital Smile Design includes

DSD is a structured protocol with several distinct components. Here is what is included in a smile design at Adental Office.

Photographic and video records

High-resolution photos and short videos of your smile in motion (talking, laughing, at rest). Captures how your lips and teeth interact dynamically, not just statically.

Intraoral 3D scan

A handheld scanner captures your teeth in 3D. The scan is the foundation for the digital design and the physical mock-up.

Software smile design

Using specialised software (DSD App, exoCAD, or similar), we design the new tooth shapes, proportions, and arrangement on screen. We share the design with you on a large display.

3D-printed try-in mock-up

The digital design is exported and a physical try-in shell is 3D-printed. We place it over your teeth temporarily so you see and feel the new smile in your own mouth before deciding.

Adjustments at this stage are inexpensive and reversible. Adjustments after veneer placement are difficult and costly.

— BENEFITS

Why DSD changes cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry without a design protocol relies on the patient describing what they want and the dentist interpreting it freehand. DSD replaces that gap with a structured visual conversation.

No surprises after treatment

You see and approve the projected smile before any tooth is prepared. The final result matches what you saw in the design, not what the dentist imagined.

Test before commit

The 3D-printed mock-up lets you wear your new smile temporarily. Try it at home, with friends, in photos. Decide based on how it feels in real life.

Better communication with the lab

When veneers or crowns are fabricated, the lab works from your approved digital design rather than written instructions. The fabricated restorations match the design more precisely.

Reduces the need for adjustments

Cases planned with DSD typically need fewer chair-side adjustments after placement. The shape, length, and proportions are right the first time.

Reversible at the design stage

If you do not like the design, we adjust the software file and reprint the try-in. No tooth has been touched, no enamel has been reduced. Total flexibility.

— PRICING & INSURANCE

DSD cost in Barrie & how it integrates

Digital Smile Design is priced as a planning fee separate from the treatment itself. The fee covers photography, scanning, software design time, and the 3D-printed try-in mock-up. Adental Office follows the Ontario Dental Association Fee Guide. For larger treatment plans (full mouth reconstruction, multi-veneer cases), the DSD fee is sometimes credited toward the treatment cost.

Insurance and DSD

Digital Smile Design itself is generally not covered by insurance because it is a planning protocol rather than a treatment procedure. The treatment that follows (veneers, crowns, restorations) is covered according to your plan. CDCP does not currently cover DSD planning. We are upfront about which fees are clinical and which are design at consultation.

— WHAT TO EXPECT

What to expect through Digital Smile Design

DSD is a 2-3 visit planning process spread over a few weeks. Here is the actual sequence at Adental Office.

1

Photography and scanning visit

We take high-resolution photos, short videos of your smile in motion, and an intraoral 3D scan. Visit takes about 60-90 minutes. No teeth are touched.

2

Design simulation

Using the photos and scan, we design your new smile in specialised software. This happens between visits and takes a few days.

3

Try-in visit

You return for a try-in appointment. We place the 3D-printed mock-up over your existing teeth (no preparation, no glue, just a temporary fit). You see and feel the new smile in your own mouth.

4

Adjustments and approval

If anything needs adjusting (length, shape, proportion), we revise the design and reprint. Once you approve the final design, we proceed with the actual treatment phase.

Most patients describe the try-in moment as decisive: they finally see who they will look like, in their own face, before committing to anything irreversible.

— WHY CHOOSE US

Why patients in Barrie choose Adental Office for DSD

Full DSD protocol, not partial

We do photography, video, intraoral scanning, software design, and 3D-printed try-in. Some clinics skip steps. We do the whole protocol.

Design conversation, not handoff

You sit with us at a screen and we walk through the design together. Adjustments happen in conversation, not by message.

Same dentist plans and treats

The dentist who designs your smile is the dentist who places the restorations. No design-to-execution gap, no specialist handoff.

Reversible at design stage

No tooth is touched until you approve the final design. The protocol is built around your right to change your mind without consequence.
